Waiting on Wednesday #74

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine and is where we can talk about books we are looking forward to being released!

Here are my picks for the week:

Heavy Metal (Goddesses Rising, #2)

Summary:

The world is not what Riley Kordek imagined. On the run from those who’ve targeted her, all Riley wants is a chance to figure out her new ability to bend metal’s energy. When a hot guy who knows more than he should helps her escape her attackers, she thinks she might’ve found someone who can lead her to the answers she needs.

Three years ago, Sam Remington walked away from his employer and the woman he loved, and now, all he’s looking to do is fill the gaping hole left behind. Except, when Sam takes Riley to the Society for Goddess Education and Defense, the stakes rise beyond what either of them could have imagined.

After being alone for so long, falling for Sam would be far too easy for Riley—and far too painful, once his old flame calls needing his help. Worse, Riley uncovers a plot with disastrous ramifications not only for herself, but for Sam and the people he loves—and potentially every goddess in the country.

Why I'm Waiting:

Even though this is the second book in the Goddess Rising series and I didn't read the first book in the series I'm really looking forward to this one coming out because it sounds like it's going to be awesome.

Gideon Smith and the Mechanical Girl

Summary:

Nineteenth century London is the center of a vast British Empire. Airships ply the skies and Queen Victoria presides over three-quarters of the known world—including the East Coast of America, following the failed revolution of 1775.

London might as well be a world away from Sandsend, a tiny village on the Yorkshire coast. Gideon Smith dreams of the adventure promised him by the lurid tales of Captain Lucian Trigger, the Hero of the Empire, told in Gideon’s favorite “penny dreadful.” When Gideon’s father is lost at sea in highly mysterious circumstances Gideon is convinced that supernatural forces are at work. Deciding only Captain Lucian Trigger himself can aid him, Gideon sets off for London. On the way he rescues the mysterious mechanical girl Maria from a tumbledown house of shadows and iniquities. Together they make for London, where Gideon finally meets Captain Trigger.

But Trigger is little more than an aging fraud, providing cover for the covert activities of his lover, Dr. John Reed, a privateer and sometime agent of the British Crown. Looking for heroes but finding only frauds and crooks, it falls to Gideon to step up to the plate and attempt to save the day...but can a humble fisherman really become the true Hero of the Empire?

David Barnett's Gideon Smith and the Mechanical Girl is a fantastical steampunk fable set against an alternate historical backdrop: the ultimate Victoriana/steampunk mash-up!

Quote-Tastic Monday #9

This one is simple and just about sharing your favorite quotes and the books they come from! Hosted by the FABULOUS Anna at Herding Cats & Burning Soup

I was born in 1990 so my generation is pretty much the original Potterheads. I got the first 3 books when they first came out and I'm still a huge fan to this day. Dumbledore has always been a favourite character of mine so I had to share one of my favourite, funny Dumbledore quotes.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4)
Summary & Cover taken from Goodreads.com

I took a wrong turn on the way to the bathroom and found myself in a beautifully proportioned room I had never seen before, containing a really rather magnificent collection of chamberpots. When I went back to investigate more closely, I discovered that the room had vanished. But I must keep an eye out for it. Possibly it is only accessible at five thirty in the morning. Or it may only appear at the quarter moon - or when the seeker has an exceptionally full bladder.”

Dancing with Detective Danger

Summary:

Uncovering secrets and exposing truth are all in a day’s work for private investigator Sterling Aegar. But when her latest case threatens to reveal her own buried feelings for an old love, Sterling runs for cover.

A body in the bathtub and pleas from a jilted wife to find her wayward husband mean a welcome break from the usual humdrum cases Sterling and her sister, Lacey, are called to investigate. But when Sterling’s old flame, Detective Ben Kirby, walks into the murder scene, she feels her world spin out of control. Danger from thugs and murderers poses no greater threat than the peril she’d suffer if she lets daredevil Ben get too close.

Seeing Sterling for the first time in two years is for Ben like drinking in a healing tonic. He could never forget the way it felt to run his hands over her delicious curves or the way she touched his soul. She remains the one person who can make the emptiness in his gut go away. Finding the murderer is his job, but protecting Sterling from seriously dangerous people is his mission.

As the case unfolds, Sterling and Ben not only solve the murder and locate the missing husband, they confront secrets that set them each free from a painful past.

When I saw Dancing with Detective Danger was going to be touring this month I just had to sign up. This is one that I had recommended to me by a friend and I'd been looking for a way to read it for awhile and I've had good luck with Crimson Romance titles in the past and this one was really great.

I don't usually go for romantic suspense novels but I do like them on occasion especially if they're written as well as Dancing with Detective Danger was. I started reading this one as one of my side reads but that quickly turned into it being my main read at the time it was positively addicting!

I really liked Sterling and Lacey. They both had to deal with two huge losses and managed to turn bad tidings into a profitable private detective agency and the case in this story was written in such a way that it didn't take away from the romance between Ben and Sterling I found that the story was both equal parts suspense and romance and boy oh boy was there some steamy romance.

Ben is a totally swoon worthy love interest for Sterling and the fact that they loved each other so much really showed through the writing and their chemistry was absolutely amazing. I really loved the way they went together because they were just one of those couples that you knew would end up together in he end because they couldn't be themselves with other people.

I found the mystery/suspense aspect of the novel was very well put together. It was totally engrossing and enthralling and for a romantic suspense novel this one really kept me on my toes. The characters were fantastic, the plot was addictive and the writing was superb and I can't wait to read another book by Lynn Crandall.

I would recommend this one to all fans of romantic suspense novels with a darker twist with lots of romance and great writing.

*[Blog Tour Review & Tour Wide Giveaway] Taming Johnny by Kaylie Newell

Taming Johnny

Summary:

He's got the temperament of a lion, and she's just the one to tame him.

Police records clerk Emma Beaumont has always played it safe, never taking many risks. Quiet, shy, and a little overweight, she's convinced herself that she's comfortable with the way her life is. That is until she lays eyes on incredibly sexy Lieutenant Johnny Street. But she's never met anyone with such a terrible attitude. He's a jerk. Everyone thinks so.

Little by little, Emma is forced to uncover a stronger, spunkier part of herself, one that isn't afraid to stand up to him. As she gets to know him, she starts seeing glimpses of a very different man. A man who has known great heartache, and as it turns out, has good reason for embracing such bitterness. Behind his sharp tongue and harsh demeanor, lies a young man who's desperately afraid of losing what's left of himself.

As Emma's intense desire for Johnny turns to love, she will have to ask herself how far she'll go to chip away at his frosty heart. And at what cost.

Content Warning: contains sensual sex and strong language.

Taming Johnny was another one of those books that I wasn't sure I would like but was really happy that I did like it. I've never been much of a contemporary romance fan but this summer the genre is turning out to be one that is getting me out of my many reading slumps.

Johnny and Emma had a great chemistry and I really like the fact that while the book was only 119 pages long the way Kaylie Newell wrote Taming Johnny made the story of how they got together seem longer than it was.

I have to admit thought that for me Emma was my favourite character. She was just so sweet and likable but feisty at the same time and I admired the fact that she didn't let Johnny get the best of her. I wasn't that big of a fan of Johnny even in the ended but I did like the characters as a couple. Johnny was just too much of an ass for me to deal with but I did understand where his anger was coming from and why he was so hesitant about getting involved with another woman again but sometimes he could be a little to cruel for me to deal with.

I loved the way their story was told though and it had be laughing on and off and it was an awesome afternoon escape for me when I read it. Even though Emma and Johnny didn't seem like they would make it and get together I'm so glad that they did because despite all their differences they work amazingly well together.

I would recommend Taming Johnny to fans of contemporary romances with a police officer as the hero and a great story. The writing was impressive and I'll be on the look out for Kaylie Newells writing in the future.

Waiting on Wednesday #73

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine and is where we can talk about books we are looking forward to being released!

Here are my picks for the week:

Fire & Flood

Summary:

A modern day thrill ride, where a teen girl and her animal companion must participate in a breathtaking race to save her brother's life—and her own.

Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can't determine what's wrong, her parents decide to move to the middle of nowhere for the fresh air. She's lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying—and she's helpless to change anything.

Until she receives mysterious instructions on how to become a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed. It's an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother's illness. But all the Contenders are after the Cure for people they love, and there's no guarantee that Tella (or any of them) will survive the race.

The jungle is terrifying, the clock is ticking, and Tella knows she can't trust the allies she makes. And one big question emerges: Why have so many fallen sick in the first place?

Victoria Scott's electrifying novel grabs readers by the throat and doesn't let go.
Summary & Cover taken from Goodreads.com
Length: 320 pages (Hardcover)
Expected Publication Date: February 25th 2014 by Scholastic Press

Why I'm Waiting:

I don' read many books published by Scholastic Press any more since the books tend to be more middle grade and that is so not my preferred genre but Flood & Fire looks really amazing!

Elusion

Summary:

Soon, Elusion® will change the world and life as we know it.

A new technology called Elusion is sweeping the country. An app, visor and wristband will virtually transport you to an exotic destination where adventure can be pursued without the complications—or consequences—of real life.

Regan is an Elusion insider. Or at least she used to be. Her father invented the program, and her best friend, Patrick, heir to the tech giant Orexis, is about to release it nationwide. But ever since her father’s unexpected death, Regan can’t bear to Escape, especially since waking up from the dream means crashing back to her grim reality.

Still, when there are rumors of trouble in Elusion—accusations that it’s addictive and dangerous— Regan is determined to defend it. But the critics of Elusion come from surprising sources, including Josh, the handsome skeptic with his own personal stakes. As Regan investigates the claims, she discovers a disturbing web of secrets. She will soon have to choose between love and loyalty…a decision that will affect the lives of millions.

Suspense, thrills, and romance fuel this near-future story about the seductive nature of a perfect virtual world, and how far one girl will go to uncover the truth behind the illusions.

The Sunday Post #33

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It's a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

Happy Sunday Folks!

It has been a hellish week here and nothing is going he way it's supposed to go. I missed several days of blogging due to family stuff and I know it shouldn't be a big deal but I use the blog as an escape and posting stuff is really therapeutic for me so missing days+the craziness at home has me going stir crazy. Luckily I have the amazing Mr. Turning the Pages who tries to keep me sane.

I'm not sure whether or not I will be blogging regularly in the coming week but please check back often. If I have not answered your messages/comments I'm sorry. I just haven't had much energy after dealing with other things to get back to you yet. It's nothing personal so please don't be offended! I am hoping that things will get better soon because not only has the blog been suffering but so has my reading which is a darned shame because I had to return a TON of books to the library that couldn't be renewed because I didn't get a chance to read them yet. On the upside I went to the library on Friday and stocked up on a bunch.

I hope you all have a fantastic week and I'm sorry that I'm not going to post links to the posts from the last two weeks but hopefully you won't hold it against me and are content with looking at my book haul.
