Waiting on Wednesday #148

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine and is where we can talk about books we are looking forward to being released.

The Last Neanderthal

Summary:

From the author of The Bear, the enthralling story of two women separated by millennia, but linked by an epic journey that will transform them both

40,000 years in the past, the last family of Neanderthals roams the earth. After a crushingly hard winter, their numbers are low, but Girl, the oldest daughter, is just coming of age and her family is determined to travel to the annual meeting place and find her a mate.

But the unforgiving landscape takes its toll, and Girl is left alone to care for Runt, a foundling of unknown origin. As Girl and Runt face the coming winter storms, Girl realizes she has one final chance to save her people, even if it means sacrificing part of herself.

In the modern day, archaeologist Rosamund Gale works well into her pregnancy, racing to excavate newly found Neanderthal artifacts before her baby comes. Linked across the ages by the shared experience of early motherhood, both stories examine the often taboo corners of women's lives.

Haunting, suspenseful, and profoundly moving, THE LAST NEANDERTHAL asks us to reconsider all we think we know about what it means to be human.

Why I'm Waiting:

I love stories that are told in two different times and I love anything that touches on prehistoric fiction. This is one I can't wait to get my hands on. Plus I'm really loving this cover.

The Wages of Sin

Summary:

An irresistible mystery set in 1890s Edinburgh, Kaite Welsh's THE WAGES OF SIN features a female medical student-turned-detective, and will thrill fans of Sarah Waters and Antonia Hodgson.

Sarah Gilchrist has fled from London to Edinburgh in disgrace and is determined to become a doctor, despite the misgivings of her family and society. As part of the University of Edinburgh's first intake of female medical students, Sarah comes up against resistance from lecturers, her male contemporaries, and - perhaps worst of all - her fellow women, who will do anything to avoid being associated with a fallen woman...

When one of Sarah's patients turns up in the university dissecting room as a battered corpse, Sarah finds herself drawn into Edinburgh's dangerous underworld of bribery, brothels and body snatchers - and a confrontation with her own past.

Why I'm Waiting:

I love a good old Victorian mystery especially with a female protagonist. Plus she's a med student turned detective? Awesome.

    1. The Last Neanderthal reminds me of Labyrinth by Kate Mosse, with the dual timelines...maybe that's what you're thinking of?

  5. The Last Neanderthal isn't a book that would usually grab me with the Neanderthal timeline but the premise is so intriguing! The Wages of Sin looks amazing! Love the idea of a female medical student in the 1890s and really a medical student as a detective in general. Need to check this one out!

  6. Both of these have interesting premises. The first reminds me faintly of what Susanna Kearsley would write. For new books that are so new, I tend to wait to see what others think of it unless I totally know the author.

    1. Thanks Stephanie! I've yet to dip my toe into Kearsley's writings but I know she writes a lot of dual timelines in her stories. I'm not much of a waiter lol, I see a new book and have to try it...especially if it's not one of the *top* books.
