And now an Excerpt from 'Deceitful Truths'

Her eyebrows drew together and then she glanced at her phone. "Oh my god, I've got to get going. Jesus, I did it to him again." She dug in her purse and threw down some money before jumping to her feet. "Sorry."
She ran out the door before he barely made it to his feet. He quickly pulled out some money only to realize she'd left enough for the full bill. He ran out after her and headed back to the office. She was just pulling out of the parking lot. She either didn't see him waving or deliberately ignored him. He was tempted to follow her but knew that would be pointless. Friday afternoon traffic could sometimes be more crippling than rush hour during the week. Sighing he went to the office. As he walked by her desk, he glanced at her computer but kept going. When he reached his door he just stood there. Did she or didn't she?
It was something he knew would piss him off to no end but he told himself that he was only trying to protect her. He suspected that she had as much firsthand knowledge as the women she was trying to help and he needed to protect his company. He sat down at her desk and logged onto her computer. This time she'd forgotten to clear her tracks, which made it so much easier to hack into her website.
The information he was reading, the stories the women were telling made him feel nauseous and sick. Kind of like the morning after a really heavy binge. He'd read about incidents of abuse and had seen some of it but it had never been a part of his life. He'd never really been exposed to it, been this close to it. It was just too unbelievable for words. He had to close his eyes at one point or he thought he'd throw up. About to log out he noticed there was a message centre. Guilt started thumping at his chest telling him he was making a big mistake when he opened her emails. What he read though stopped his heart almost completely.
The real problem was what was he supposed to do about it?

Excerpt

“You really should change that light bulb,” Matt said, glancing around us.
“I know.” I pushed aside my wallet to dig to the bottom of my oversized purse. “I kind of take for granted that this is supposed to be a safe neighborhood.”
“Until an alien abducts you off your poorly lit porch.”
“Very funny.” I glanced up from my purse with a smile. “But really, it’s late. You could have been home by now.”
“Gen, I’m glad to walk you to your door. I would have worried about you if I hadn’t.”
I considered him as we stood there on my porch, the light flickering above us. I didn’t want him to leave, but I didn’t know how to ask him to stay. Maybe I could ask him in for a drink, though I’d already had enough.
But I have those cupcakes…
Yeah. I could offer him cupcakes. They weren’t his favorite, chocolate with sprinkles, but yellow cake with milk chocolate frosting had to be a close second, right? Hadn’t he said a cupcake will fix everything?
“I’m really glad we went out tonight.” His voice made me jump and I dropped the keys. We both bent to pick them up at the same time and bumped foreheads.
“Sorry,” he said.
“It’s okay, I’m fine.” I clasped my forehead and laughed. Probably, I sounded hysterical. Like a rabid hyena. I couldn’t even look him in the eye when I took the keys from him. “Thanks for inviting me. I had a lot of fun tonight.”
“Me too,” he said.
I put the key into the lock, turning it slowly as I struggled with what to do about him and my out of control libido. Unlocking my door hadn’t given me enough time to figure things out, though, so I tried to prolong sliding the patio door open. That didn’t take long either, and I hesitated in the doorway, still unsure. I opened my mouth to ask him in, but nothing came out. So I stepped backward through the doorway, my gaze glued to his. After a moment, he followed me inside, part of his face lost in shadows.
Time stood still. My tongue darted out to lick my lips, and I lifted up onto my toes as he lowered his head to meet me halfway. The smell of his cologne surrounded me and my eyes drifted shut. He grasped me loosely around my back, pulling me close, sending shivers coursing through my body. His breath caressed my skin, his lips just a whisper away from mine, and my lips parted…

About the Author
Niecey Roy knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, but her moment of enlightenment came after watching the movie You’ve Got Mail. It was then she realized her place in life, and happily parked her butt on writing romance. Her dream was to create sexy vixens, hunky, half-naked heroes, and above all, romance; lots and lots of butterflies in the belly, breathless first kisses and happily-ever-afters.
When she’s not at her day job where she works as a legal assistant, she can be found at home at a cluttered desk, pounding her tired little fingers away on a keyboard with nothing but black pepper flavored sunflower seeds and Visine as her weapons for mass-romance-novel-creation. When her fingers need a break, you’ll find her at a table with friends, drinking a few martinis and showing off a new pair of (sometimes ridiculous) high heels. She’s usually the loudest at the table and most often the one snorting with laughter.
Niecey is the author of Fender Bender Blues, a contemporary romantic comedy published by The Wild Rose Press. Her new novel to be released November 2013, Another Shot At Love, is the first novel in the What’s Love??? series.

*[Blog Tour Excerpt] A Hard Act To Follow by Henry Bushkin

Summary:

"A Hard Act to Follow," is a non-fiction literary account of Henry Bushkin's tenure as Johnny Carson's lawyer, business partner, and friend. The book gives genuine insight into the 'Carson behind Johnny' with candid personal vignettes about the two, during the rollicking years when Johnny was the undisputed king of television. This is an engaging, eye-opening, anecdote-packed story about a young lawyer and his client, one of the biggest celebrities in the country. This funny, unfiltered account gives readers a look at the Johnny Carson that none but a select few really knew.
Summary and Cover provided by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer Book Blasts & Book Tours
Length: 240 pages
Publication Date: 2012

Excerpt:

Johnny Carson, his famously puckish face obscured by sunglasses and disguised by distress, led a squad of men with downturned mouths and upturned collars through a rain-swept Manhattan evening. Carson strode purposefully, and his four followers hurried behind, dodging taxis and umbrellas and jumping puddles to keep pace. Their destination: a modest high-rise in the East Forties near First Avenue. Their mission: a dubious if not downright illegal cloak- and-dagger caper to enter an apartment to which they had no title, let alone keys. Their identities: Joe Mullen, a licensed New York private eye, straight out of Mickey Spillane, serious and capable; Mario Irizarry, his tall, gaunt aide-de-camp, adept at lock picking and as conversational as a clam; and Arthur Kassel, my best friend. A security ex- pert/crime photographer/police groupie with slightly grandiose ambitions, Arthur had made it his business over the years to befriend important people, and about a year earlier, at a police benefit, Arthur made friends with the event’s emcee, the host of The Tonight Show, Johnny Carson.
And then there was me, the last in line, the one who was hustling hardest to keep up, the one beset by worries—worried that I’d fall behind, worried that I’d collapse, worried that five hustling men in Manhattan who didn’t resemble the Knicks would draw the attention of the police. But everybody on the sidewalks had their heads down, and we didn’t stand out more than the average bustling New Yorker.
Sucking wind, I was glad when we finally reached our destination, although as we stood in the lobby, shaking the rain off our London Fogs, I began to feel a sense of panic taking hold. What was I doing here? I was a graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School! I had sworn an oath to uphold the law, not violate it, and breaking and entering in the state of New York is a felony. As if sensing my panic, Johnny looked over at me. “Don’t worry kid,” he said reassuringly. “Nothing’s going to happen to you. Trust me.”

With only eight days left before my parents’ departure, there were a gazillion of things to attend to. We actually had lists of lists. And let’s not forget the blizzard of special delivery letters: One from Daddyboys to Mr. Toynbee at “World Travel” accepting the award; another from Francesca to our relatives in New York telling them Clay and Rachael would be visiting; and still another to Great Aunt Maude and Great Uncle Harry who were asked to visit Home Farm to supposedly help out at Daddyboys’ business but actually to keep Francesca and me out of trouble. Fat chance!
Travel documents needed signatures, a money draft had to be drawn up and trip reservations needed verification. As it turned out, my parents would also linger an extra day in Manhattan to hammer out the rest of the “particulars” with the editors of “World Travel” before venturing across the pond.
Our usually silent phone didn’t stop ringing. People we hardly knew called or stopped by trying to sell my parents luggage, wallets, passport holders and cures for Montezuma’s Revenge. Then there was the constant stream of unsolicited advice: Don’t drink the water; watch out for pickpockets and don’t spoil those European waiters and bellhops by over tipping.
Daddyboys was clearly enjoying the spotlight. Forget Lost Nation’s only newspaper, The Daily Pulse, in our tight-knit community, the grape vine was the fastest way to get the word out and it didn’t take much to start the information rolling. I recall an afternoon when 1,000 people gathered at one of the neighboring farms to witness a gizmo dreamed up by a local that was supposed to pick up and drop mail sacks in one fell swoop. Apparently, he’d worked on this machine for nearly a decade. That was considered really BIG news.
These days, however, the folks just wanted to gaze upon the town’s newest celebrity, whose face and prose would grace the feature page of a big time magazine. While my father was basking in the radiance of his growing fame, Rachael also looked to be caught up in the excitement, which surprised me. For once, she didn’t seem to care one whit about having to set her baking aside or letting her beloved stove go cool for hours at a time.
She and Francesca were also each other’s constant companions. Together they hemmed and restitched clothing, redesigning everything “decent” in my mother's closet at least twice.
Shopping trips were high on the list. Hats, gloves and shoes were waiting to be tried on and purchased, not to mention two new sets of suspenders in gray and blue for Daddyboys.
“And you need proper lingerie, Rachael. No daughter of mine is going to Paris without a few frilly under things. It'll add to your confidence." Francesca pronounced.
While my mother made a series of ruthless packing decisions, Daddyboys finalized arrangements for help at the garage while he was gone.
Uncle Harry would take on the occasional major mechanical problems. But my father also wanted to bring in someone who already knew the day-to-day ropes and could help Harry out with the nuts and bolts of routine maintenance. For that, there wasn’t anyone better than Abraham Lancer, the solitary taxicab driver in Lost Nation as well as the head of the only black household.
Abraham often worked with my father during the winter months when farm vehicles got their annual overhauls and the taxi business was slow. So it was decided Abraham and Harry would be looking after things, with Uncle Harry expected to drive over from Des Moines in a couple weeks.
The idea of Harry’s visit, however, was sure to unsettle Francesca.
My Great Uncle had lived a rather steady sort of life with just one or two major hitches in the proceedings. He was born and grew up with his prominent family in Lost Nation, which was where he met the Pittschtick sisters, Maude, of the gorgeous face, and Francesca of the regal limbs. Starting in elementary, they had all attended school together and it was common knowledge that Harry was the catch of the county, being the eldest son from the wealthiest family in the area. He was an earnest, sober and sweet-tempered man who early on showed a gift for both fixing machinery and fiddling with numbers. One thing was sure - he had no interest in farming and so would have to find his own way in the world.
Everyone liked Harry. He was not effusive, yet he got along famously with the high born and the low brow. And for a time, Harry and Francesca were deeply and truly in love.
I wasn’t there for the courtship but was told bits and pieces of the story many times. Everyone in Lost Nation had an opinion that colored their own treasured set of “facts.”

Excerpt:

Nick’s pulse quickened at the distinctive two part sound of a 12 gauge shell being chambered. He threw his car in reverse, the big V-8 roaring, tires eating into the dirt track, a cloud of dust enveloping him, as he put the truck between himself and the shotgun. A blast, shattering the passenger side glass, sprayed across his seat, but Nick had already opened his door, rolling out onto the ground. He made his way to the back tire, listening for Junior Pendleton’s position. Junior made it easy.
“Get the hell off my property, goddammit. You got no right to be here.”
Crouching, Nick used the rear of his truck for cover. Junior had walked up to Nick’s pick up, sticking his head through the shot out window. Nick rushed him from behind, slamming him hard into the truck, the shotgun firing into the ground by Junior’s feet.
Junior screamed, “Sonofabitch. My damn foot. Son-of-a-bitch.”
Nick kept Junior jammed into the window, ripping the gun away from the farmer’s hand. As Junior continued to struggle, cursing, Nick noticed several pellet holes clearly visible in the man’s worn cowboy boots.
“I don’t think that’s how you want to start this conversation, Junior.”
