*[Blog Tour Review] Believing Again (Second Chance #5) by Peggy Bird

Believing Again (Second Chance, #5)

Summary:

As the youngest woman ever to make detective in the Portland Police Bureau, Danny Hartmann has racked up an impressive record. It doesn’t keep her warm at night, but it does make up for feeling she’s somehow disappointed her family with her career choice. Called to the scene of the murder of a homeless veteran in a transient camp, Danny doesn’t expect it to be anything other than another case she clears.

Then she meets the man who made the 9-1-1 call and everything changes.

Jake Abrams, a volunteer doctor at the Veterans Medical Services Clinic, doesn’t have much faith in anything other than his work and the vets he cares deeply about. Not shy about voicing his opinions, even to the cops investigating the murder of one of his patients, he annoys Danny with his snarky remarks.

However, working the case, she has to rely on Jake to help her find her way around the transient camps under the bridges and in the city’s huge wilderness park. As they work together, their attraction becomes mutual and passionate.

But Jake has demons. Like the vets he cares for, he carries scars both mental and physical from his service in the National Guard in Iraq. He fears Danny will turn from him in disgust when she discovers them. She’s afraid his experience in Iraq makes it impossible for him to love someone who does what she does for a living.

When the murderer of the homeless vets comes too close to Jake, it’ll be up to Danny to save his life. It’ll be up to their love for each other to save them both.

Believing Again was my first read by Peggy Bird whom I've been wanting to try for some time now and I really can't believe it took me this long to finally give her a try because she's just fantastic!

Believing Again was a great romantic read. At 161 pages long it had the feeling of one that was at least twice as long due to her detailed descriptions, and her characters were great. Jake and Danny were a great couple. I liked seeing a female cop and a male doctor as the leads in a romance since I usually find that their stations are reversed.

Danny was a strong female lead, I liked that she was willing to speak her mind and that she was able to kick some ass too. Plus she was willing to put up with Jake which wasn't easy in the beginning. Jake, didn't strike me as a hero that I would come to like right away but he grew on me, and on Danny if their sexy time had anything to say about it. I liked them together because they were one of those couples that you wouldn't think would go together at first but end up doing so in the end.

Apart from this being romance novel there was a great suspense element to it as well. What surprised me the most when I read Believing Again was that the suspense was a really major aspect to the story. A lot of the romantic suspense novel's I've read are called that but when it comes to reading them there is little to no real suspense in it. That totally wasn't the case in this one and I'm super glad because I loved the suspense.

Overall, I thought Believing Again was a really great romantic suspense novel with awesome characters, a great plot line and a thrilling ride. I can honestly say that while this was my first Peggy Bird book it won't be my last and I can't wait to read the other books in the series.

I would recommend this to fans of the Spicy line from Crimson Romance as well as those looking for a shorter romantic suspense read without sacrificing the quality despite the length.
