*[Blog Tour Review & Giveaway] Taking Root in Provence by Anne-Marie Simons

Taking Root in Provence

Summary:

They agreed on one thing before retiring-they would travel, sniff around at other countries and other lifestyles, and discover along the way which place came closest to "having it all." There they would drop anchor and go with the flow. The going has been good, so much so that these former Washingtonians have decided to make France their permanent home. They chose the city over the countryside and took on the challenges and pleasures of Aix-en-Provence, where they have been doing as the locals do for more than a decade now. The daily markets, strikes, gypsies, curious villagers, ancient traditions, truffle cheaters, pagan and religious celebrations, secret swimming spots in the middle of Marseilles-it's all there to be suffered and enjoyed. Not to mention an interest in food that borders on the obsessive. Add good weather, a pinch of hedonism, a dose of culture, and it all adds up to that elusive prize: quality of life. In this collection of vignettes, take a ride in the slow lane with Taking Root in Provence, through la France profonde, ancient Roman cities, and that wonderful blend of the old and new worlds that is today's Provence.

I love a good, heartwarming memoir so that's exactly why I signed up for this tour, well that and the fact that I thought the cover was really cute. Simple, but I love it to pieces and it really does fit in with the book itself.

I'm obsessed with moving abroad myself and while France isn't where I want to move to I do want to visit it, and Anne-Marie's memoir just solidifies my resolve to visit there one day. After reading Taking Root, I'm feeling a little melancholy that I wasn't there to see all the sights and sounds that were happening.

I thought that Taking Root was a sweet, funny, heartwarming feel good read that I gobbled up yesterday afternoon. The way that it was written was just so honest, I couldn't help but like Anne-Marie and Oscar and was glad to be able to share in their adventures of living in Provence even though it was only through reading the book.

Overall, I thought this was a great read and I'm very glad I signed up for the tour because it was a great pick me up. I would recommend Taking Root in Provence to fans of memoirs and travelogues and who want to see what life is like in France.

  1. Oh I have lots of choices. Scotland is great, and Berlin, Germany is a wonderful city but they're both too cold. There are a few places in Greece and Turkey that I'd enjoy but I think my first choice would be somewhere in Thailand. Thanks

  2. I'm a complete Anglophile, so I would move to somewhere in Great Britain, although it's a bit hard to decide where. I loved the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, but as the previous commenter pointed out, they'd be a bit cold in the winter. Same with the Yorkshire dales. I'm also very drawn to Wales, especially around Snowdonia (again with the cold winters!) The Cotswolds are lovely, but very overrun with tourists in the summer. Still, I think I could be happy almost any of those places. I would definitely choose a village or small town with a railway station not too far away, so I could travel and also get to the city for museums, concerts, and plays.

  3. I think I would move to London. There are so many nice parks, theatres and museums. And a lot of chances for shopping. I have visited there a few times and love the city!

  4. Part of the reason that I love reading is to explore places that I just can't get to yet. It is great to hear that this book brought France to you.

  5. thanks for your great review, glad this worked so well for you, I also adored that book.
    fun to read the comments!
mine is late, sorry, after-turkey-effect, lol [yesterday was Thanksgiving in the US, with turkey as the traditional dish of the day, in case some of your non US readers wonder what I'm rambling about.
not entering the giveaway, but I have to say, France is great for tourists, but I would not go back to my home country myself, as life is so crazy expensive - compared to the US.

  7. Hallo Kimberly May!

After posting the last review on the tour earlier today, I wanted to drop by and see if everyone else on the tour enjoyed this selection as much as I had! :) Thankful to see that you had a smashing time getting caught up in the world of Provence as much as I did! :) Wow. I think what was so very captivating is that the subject of 'finding our wings to transplant ourselves elsewhere' is a very universal allure! I, too, found that the book spoke directly to my own future goals as it did you; and likewise, my plans are not for France either! :) I think it doesn't matter if where we're following our heart to go differs from Simons, only that at the heart of all of us are a threaded passion for discovering a way of life which is encouraging us to seek it out! :)

    [not an entry!]

  8. I am glad you liked my book and thank you for a lovely review. I see that not many of your readers share my passion for Provence but all seem to have a place of their dreams. And that's what this is all about.
