Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
Top Ten Books I Can't Believe I Read:
I chose these because these are the top ten books I can't believe I read because I cannot for the life of me fathom how I was able to make it through these without giving up. In looking through my old notes there was absolutely nothing redeemable about these reads for me but I powered through. Do I regret finishing them? No, many of these were the first in the series. Some of them were new to me authors so I think that me, reading them start to finish was a good thing because I know that these are authors I am not going near again. If I didn't finish these chances are I would have tried something else by the authors but I don't want to waste my time reading books I know I won't like because the authors left such strong impressions on me.
In the Woods looked like a book I'd like, and I kinda wnted to try Tana French, but when I read a sample it didn't really grab me. So I've held off...
ReplyDeleteIt seems I'm kind of in the minority with In The Woods Greg. I just found the characters to be very one dimensional and the story very fragmented. It didn't grab me in the beginning at first either but I stuck it out and it never improved. Hope that if you try it it treats you better.

DeleteNever Let Me Go is on my list today as well albeit with a different cover. I can't remember much about that book at all!

DeleteI chose a few books that I can't believe I actually managed to finish, too. A lot of people have recommended Never Let Me Go and Zom-B to me, but I've never felt inclined to pick them up - thank you for making me think I made the right decision!

DeleteI'll never forget Flowers in the Attic. I read it as a teen and it left me feeling so bad for the brother and sister team who had to live that nightmare. Maybe it would have a different impact if I had read it later in life.
ReplyDeleteI read it for the first time when I was about 10 and then again a couple of years ago. One of the most poorly written books I've ever read, and not because of the content but the writing itself.
DeleteI remember sneaking and reading Flowers in the Attic. It seemed to be such a taboo book back then. Now, not so much. I own Amity but never read it.

DeleteI'm reaching a point where I'm having a hard time talking myself into finishing books that I don't like. There are so many good books in the world (and so many books in my to-read stacks) that I don't want to waste time on books I don't like. But there were quite a few books I've read in the past that I forced myself to finish, always hoping they would get better but they never did.
ReplyDeleteI generally give a book 50 pages or so to grab me before I decide to give up or not. Most of these were read a few years ago when I was more lenient? For lack of a better word. Now I don't feel like I have to finish a book i dont like.
DeleteAmity was tough, but I remembered loving Flowers in the Attic and its sequels. Don't think I would bother reading that series now.

I loved Flowers in the Attic when I read it the first time when I was 10, I figured despite the weirdness, I'd try again and it totally wasn't worth it.
DeleteI've thought about reading Amity but read enough negative reviews that I've decided not to. I did read In the Woods and while I enjoyed parts of it there were bits I had issues with and the fact that both mysteries didn't get solved drove me CRAZY! There was enough I liked that has me looking forward to the next book in the series.
ReplyDeleteYou nailed it on the In The Woods remark, I hated that neither mystery was solved. For me this one was very, very fragmented and disjointed. I just couldn't get into it at all. A little piece of me is curious about trying the second book but I'm really hesitant about it.
DeleteYeah I guess with novels your going to occasionally get a dud. There have been a lot of novels I have read and could not continue through them myself. Same with movies, games, and tv shows.
