Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read For The First Time In 2016
1. Jane Linkskold author of The Firekeeper Saga series (among others)
I've had this series on my TBR list for years now and when I finally read the first two books this past summer I was amazed by how good the series was. The characters and story were fantastic and who doesn't love a story of a feral girl with a companion wolf? Highly recommended for fantasy fans.

2. Anna Snoekstra author of Only Daughter
This debut was a fantastic start to what I'm hoping will be an amazing career for this young Australian author. I stumbled on this one by chance one day at the library a couple weeks ago and devoured it in a day. It was full of twists and turns and in the end I was completely surprised. Highly recommend to thriller fans. Definitely one of my favourite reads this year.

3. Bernard Cornwell author of The Saxon Stories series (among others)
I watched the Netflix BBC joint production of the show on Netflix earlier this year and loved it and the author had been on my TBR list for well over a decade so I was not disappointed when I read the first book (and second) in the Saxon Stories series. Highly recommend to fans of Historical Fiction.

4.Charles Soule author of The Letter 44 series (among others)
This one was another I picked up by chance at the library earlier this year. I love graphic novels but I'm not to much into the outerspace ones but this one was fantastic. I loved the first two volumes in the series and have the other 2 on hold at the library. Highly recommend to sci-fi fans.

5. Andrew Peacock author of Creatures of the Rock
I love non-fiction and I love reading books written by my fellow Canadians. This was very much like James Herriots books but set in Newfoundland. Andrew Peacock's adventures in veterinary medicine were hilarious to read about and I recommend it for animal lovers.

As much as I'm a graphic novel fan much to Mr. Turning the Pages's dismay I am not really a fan of superhero comics, however this one surprised me because while I love the Netflix show I wasn't sure if I'd like a graphic novel featuring the Devil of Hell's Kitchen. Then again I shouldn't have worried because the genius that is Kevin Smith (of Jay and Silent Bob fame) was amazing! Highly recommend for fans of the show.

Maberry is another author who'd been on my TBR list for a few years now, I borrowed the e-book of Patient Zero on a whim back in the early part of the year and loved it. Definitely a series I hope to continue in the new year. I recommend this one for all fans of thrillers with a zombie twist.

8. Lorelei James author of the Rough Riders series (among others)
I finally gave James a try after hearing so many great things about her erotic romance novels over the years and she didn't disappoint with Raising Kane. It's in the middle of a series but I still enjoyed it and recommend it to fans of cowboys and steamy romance.

9. Vince Flynn author of the Mitch Rapp series
After being pestered by my brother to read this series for the past decade I finally gave this one a try. I'd been reading it on my phone mostly when I took transit so it took me a month or so but I did enjoy this spy/thriller novel and am very much looking forward to continuing the series next year. I recommend this one for all fans of action adventure/spy/thriller novels.

10. Linda Lael Miller author of the Mustang Creek series (among others)
So many of my blogger friends have been recommending LLM to me for years that when I saw this one at my library the other week I picked it up even though it's in the middle of a series. It was a delightful, heartwarming Christmas romance and the character Mrs. Klozz reminded me very much of Debbie Macomber's Mrs. Miracle. I recommend it to all fans of romance in particular sweet holiday romances.
It's nice to try new authors sometimes. I like the new perspectives you can get, the style of the author and see how they craft their story

DeleteI didn't realize the The LAst Kingdom was written by Cornwell! I just watched that show on Netflix earlier this year and I guess I didn't make the connection!
ReplyDeleteI watched it earlier this year too and loved it, the book was fantastic and so was the second one in the series, I can't wait to continue it next year and I can't wait for season 2.

DeleteI have been wanting to try Vince Flynn for a while. His Mitch Rapp series sounds like a great group of thrillers.
ReplyDeleteIt's one that I've been hounded by my brother to read for about 10 years now, it was good and I'm looking forward to continuing the series and seeing the movie when it comes out.
DeleteAll totally new to me except for Linda Lael Miller whose books I have read over the years. The Wolf's Heart one looks like it could have my name on it.
ReplyDeleteWolf's Head, Wolf's heart was amazing Kathryn. Just enough fantasy to get into the first book without being overwhelming and confusing.

DeleteI enjoyed Christmas in Mustang Creek last year, and it got me started on reading Linda Lael Miller. And Jane Lindskold has been on my radar for a while, so maybe I'll get to her this year.

DeleteI'm a new convert to LLM too but I just love her books. They tend to end up married quicker than I like but I just love the story! Adding Creatures of the Rock to my TBR. Sounds like a book I just simply must read!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the quick marriage in this one was slightly irksome but she got me back by how cute the hero was. I hope you try Creatures of the Rock its very James Herriot-esque with a modern (Canadian) feel.

I've heard wonderful things about Vince Flynn's books and Jane Linkskold has been on my must read list for awhile now. Jonathan Maberry is another one I am really curious about trying.
