A few months ago I was asked to review the first book in The Island series and I really enjoyed it so when I was approached by her to read this one I knew I just couldn't say no. Jen is one of my favourite self published authors and every book I read by her is a unique experience in it's own right.

I liked reading The Waves because unlike The Island this one was from Walt's point of view and ever since I read The Island I've been really curious about him since that one was mostly Leia's story, plus I wanted to learn more about how their two cultures took different paths over the generations.

This one was everything that The Island was and I'm really glad I was able to fit in into my reading schedule this weekend. The thing about the books is that I liked seeing that both cultures were lacking and they both had negative thoughts towards each other but I enjoyed the fact that with some things each side differed on and others they agreed on (though that list is far smaller).

The main reason I liked this installment though is because we also got to see Walt and Leia together which is what I was looking for in the last novella so I was pleased to see that while she wasn't the focus of this one she was still in it.

Overall, this one was just as good as the first novella, but even more intriguing. I love how unique the plot is and the Star Wars theme is wonderfully unique without being campy Jen pulls off another successful novel with the grace and ease I've come to expect from her. The writing was fast paced and addictive and I managed to read this one in one sitting just like the last one. I've learned that anytime I review her books I better settle in because chances are I'm going to be glued to the book from beginning to end. I can't wait to read another story by Jen and I'm hoping she's got something in the works for her die hard fans like myself who hate waiting.

I would recommend this novella to fans of the first novella in this series The Island, as well as fans of her Shadow of Time novel. If you've yet to read anything by Jen Minkman yet I highly suggest giving the first book in this unique Star Wars inspired dystopian series a try as soon as possible.

Last night I curled up with my Kindle for the first time in months (I've been reading my e-books on Mr. Turning the Pages' iPad) and this was the one I ended up reading. I've been reading quite a bit of romance lately in particular the historical romance genre and I wanted something quick, fun, and new to read so this totally fit the bill.

I had never heard of the author before so I think To All the Rakes I've Loved Before was an excellent introduction to Anne  Barton's writing style and I've got to say that as someone who is not a fan of novella's I really enjoyed this one.

Amelia and Stephen were a great couple and I absolutely adored their pairing. The chemistry between the two was immediately apparent even though they both kind of didn't expect it there were at least some feelings there already. I loved the friendly banter between the two and wouldn't hesitate to call them one of the cutest couples I've read about this year. I really liked how the relationship between them developed even though there was a major case of insta-love in this one it didn't bring the story crashing down like it tends to. Instead I felt that their feelings were genuine and the passion that Stephen had for Amelia was admirable, she totally had him wrapped around her little finger.

I liked that Amelia wasn't your typical historical romance heroine. Yes she was a little naive, but she was also a little more cynical than most of the heroines in the genre after she got jilted and Stephen was the typical rake but I actually found that I liked him right away especially the way he was willing to work to change Amelia's mind about him and the prospect of marriage. I thought he was really charming and sweet.

Overall, I think that To All The Rakes I've Loved Before was a good little novella to read while I was in between books. I liked the way Anne Barton set their romance up and she really surprised me since I don't really enjoy novellas. For once the insta-love in a story didn't bother me and I think she handled it really well. There was plenty of laughs in this sweet little novella but there were a couple really steamy parts mixed in as well to counter the sweetness. I am definitely looking forward to reading the first book in this series as soon as I can get my hands on a copy.

I would recommend this novella to fans of Anne Barton and those who haven't read her yet. This novella is the perfect thing to pick up in between books if you're a historical romance fan who likes some giggles with her love stories. The novella can be read as a standalone and you'll have no problem following the story if you haven't read the first book in the Honeycote series.

The Island was my second read by author Jen Minkman and though I absolutely loved her novel Shadow of Time and haven't stopped raving about it (I think I almost have Mr. Turning the Pages convinced enough to give it a try) I was still nervous about reading this one. I'm not a fan of novellas except for the rare one that I read and those occur maybe once or twice a year but I really should have known better because just like Shadow of Time  I loved The Island.

 

Since this was such a short read I'm not going to mention any spoilers in the novel since I don't want to ruin the book for anyone but I will talk about the parts I enjoyed about The Island and what I didn't like so much.

 

The Island was a very unique dystopian read that was intriguing and thought provoking which I didn't expect from it at all. I went in hoping for a fun read (which it was) but didn't expected to find myself thinking about it so much but that seems to be a pattern with Jen's writing as I had the same reaction to Shadow of Time when I read it.

 

I thought the plot was very well thought out. Jen managed to entertain as well as make me thing about what she was writing about. The societies of the people especially Leia's people's beliefs was interesting and definitely unexpected and utterly surprising. I loved the uniqueness of the plot because it was so refreshing and complex despite the book's short length.

 

The characters were realistic despite their odd circumstances and the societies they were born into they were still very normal though I did sense a bit of a Lord of the Flies mentality so perhaps my definition of normal is off. Leia was likeable and I really enjoyed her as a main character. Even though she had been born into such a strange way of life she still questioned things and I liked her refusal to except certain things that she learned as well as how strong of a character she became.

 

The other characters were good too though I did wish that there had been a wee bit more character development with the side characters. I wanted to see a little more emotion from some of the side characters and that is the one thing that was a drawback for me though it is one that I think can be looked past due to the quality of the plot and it wasn't as though they were one dimensional. It's more of a personal preference of mine to have a little more substance to characters I read about though I do understand that due to the length of the novella that things had to be pared down.

 

Overall, The Island was a very good read. It was fast paced, had a distinct air of adventure and discovery and I thought it was the perfect quick read that went by fast but still had quite a bit of substance. The writing was very good, characters were interesting and the plot was unique. I can honestly say that Jen Minkman is one of my favourite YA authors and I hope she continues writing because as longs as she does I'll be reading and buying her books.

 

I would highly recommend The Island to people who enjoy YA Dystopian novels that are looking for a quicker read that still packs a certain amount of punch and think this is the perfect story to immerse yourself in for the afternoon.

When I read When We Touch back in 2012 I was a little skeptical about how I would feel about it since Contemporary Romance novels aren't my favourite but having read a historical romance by the author and having really enjoyed it I had to give it a try.

 

I was not expecting to like this one very much because of the genre and the fact that it was a novella but When We Touch ended up surprising me a lot by being a more detailed well thought out novel than I though it would have been.

 

I liked the story line, the whole sisters fighting over a man thing was amusing but mostly I wanted to smack the hell out of Noelle for stealing Olivia's boyfriend Kyle and getting pregnant by him. Plus she made Olivia suffer by making her plan their shot gun wedding and no one seems to care about her feelings not even their very own mother.

 

I just felt so bad for Olivia, she was such a sweet and kind character I hated the position her sister and mother put her in. The fact that her sister's happiness was more important than the act of betrayal boggled my mind and mad me so angry! So when Olivia grew a back bone in the later parts of the story I was so glad. I also really liked the fact that she went for Brandon despite her reservations I thought they were a very good match and I liked the realism that the relationship represented even if it was sort of an insta-love situation. I say sort of because Brandon and Olivia knew each other prior to beginning their relationship but they didn't know each other very well and their feels for each other developed quickly.

 

I thought that the characters in this e-novella were wonderfully developed. Considering this book was only 102 pages long I was surprised to find both a character and plot driven read in such a short book. The different dynamics between all the characters were interesting and made me laugh and get angry and other times I just felt sad for the whole situation Olivia was going through but I'm glad that she found Brandon who seemed to compliment her personality so well.

 

When We Touch was a very well penned novella and is what I think is a great start to a small town romance series. The author is great at writing romances and I loved how real her characters were in this book and I will absolutely be reading the next book in this series.

 

I highly recommend When We Touch to all fans of contemporary small town romances. This was a very quick read and a great introduction to the series and makes for the perfect afternoon read especially now that the weather is warmer and can sit outside with a cold drink and slip away to Whiskey Creek.

Outfoxed was my first read by Marie Harte and even though it is the fourth story in the Cougar Falls series I felt like the book was completely able to stand on it's own. The book does mention the characters from the previous books but the romance between Grady and Gabby is completely their own and is the main focus of this 115 page e-novella.

 

I thought that Outfoxed was a decent read given it's novella status. I'm not much for shorter reads but this one was an okay one. There were things like the fact that Grady was the biggest playboy. I don't get the appeal but I can't really handle books where the writers make the male leads into alpha males who have to coddle the women they love. In that way I felt the relationship between Grady and Gabby was a little "meh". Even the naughty bits of the story were a bit repetitive and shallow but the one saving grace was that Gabby despite being a ditz was actually quite adorable and she was so sweet and kind to the people she cared about.

 

My main thing I liked about the book other than the humour, which I would describe as mildly funny was that it was a quick and easy read that helped me get back into the shapeshifter romance genre. I wouldn't say the plot was amazing but it was alright and had enough substance to keep me reading to find out what the outcome of the story would be and if Grady and Gabby would make it. For 115 pages I'd say the author did a nice job of mixing things up and making it feel like a longer read.

 

I would recommend this romance novella to fans of shapeshifter romances especially if you're in the mood for a quick read. I can see this being a weekend read or one that can be picked up when you have an hour of free time and would like to start and finish a book in one sitting.

Those of you who have been following my reviews for a while know that I am not a fan of novellas in general so I was totally surprised by how much I enjoyed Her Kilt-Clad Rogue when I read it last weekend.

 

Admittedly, I picked up the book on a whim and wasn't expecting to like it at all but I ended up enjoying it a lot. The novella centers around Genevieve Fitzsimmons a first time governess who has had to turn to working due to family debts and much to her chagrin she ends up taking a position in her teenage sweetheart's castle who abandoned her, married another woman and had a son.

 

So as you can figure poor Genevieve is having a rough time of it already and now she has to deal with Connor's unruly son Ewan as well as feeling for her old flame who is acting rather strangely. I really liked Genevieve's character a lot. She was smart, witty and was a woman who knew what she wanted. Plus she wasn't afraid to stand up for herself and Ewan when the time came.

 

Connor was a bit of an enigma in the beginning of the story and I wasn't sure if I liked him very much in the beginning but as the plot developed I liked him more. He had the weight of the world on his shoulders and when the big mystery behind his wife's death came to fruition things that were keeping him and Genevieve apart were resolved.

 

I also really liked Ewan. He was a little boy trying to be a man dealing with the sudden suicide of his mother at what he thought could have been his father's fault as well as being governed by a English woman, and dealing with a stuck up woman who was intent on taking his mothers place. He had a lot going on and I'm glad he and Genevieve were able to become friends despite his earlier reservations.

 

The overall plot was very well developed especially for a novella. I wasn't expecting there to be as strong of a story as there was given that the story was just slightly over 103 pages in length. There was a lot of components to the story and the author didn't rush into the romance aspect Her Kilt-Clad Rogue. I thought every thing went together so well and I was pleased at how the story played out. I was also pleased that the characters were as developed as they were.

 

As a first time reader of Julie Moffett I have to say that the author did an awesome job hooking me onto her writing style and I can't wait to read many more books by her and hope that she continues writing for a long time to come.

 

I would highly recommend Her Kilt-Clad Rogue to all historical romance fans out there. I think this would make for the perfect afternoon read curled up on the couch as it rains outside with a cup of hot tea on the side table and a pet in your lap. Or anytime really. Especially if you're looking for a quick, well written read.

Several weeks ago I was approached by author Danica Winters who asked if I would like to review her new e-novella The Vampire's Hope. Some of you may remember how much I enjoyed her full length novel Curse of the Werewolf (Veela Curse #1) Click Here to read my review. I loved that book so of course I had to say yes to her review request! Unfortunately life got in the way and has majorly thrown off my review schedule but here's my review!

 

Immortal Viking Warrior. Let those three words sink in for a second. I don't know about you but all together those words sound wonderful. I love any book that has those words in the description especially if it's a paranormal romance.

 

I've said it time and time again I'm not a big short story/novella fan but this one was really, really, REALLY good! It didn't even feel like a 40 page story because of the amount of detail that Danica used to tell the story there was a lot more substance than I dared hope for and hallelujah there was very little if any fluff to the story.

 

I really enjoyed Ellie's character. She's been through a hell of a lot in her life and she's just trying to keep on truckin' when her world is once again flipped upside down when she's made into a vampire but that is the least of her worries after some time.

 

Then there's the Immortal Viking Warrior Ian who is Ellie's love interest and is working to bring down the coven of vampires that Ellie now belongs to thanks to a deadly turn on the dance floor with a master vamp. But he's determined to keep Ellie on the side of all things good because even though her heart no longer beats he can see she is good.

 

I loved all the components of the story and I really loved the romance between Ellie and Ian because they work together so well and are definitely meant to be together. If you're looking for a great quick read and love paranormal tales I highly suggest you try The Vampire's Hope a try. I can't wait to read more by Danica and I hope she comes out with more stuff soon!

I'm all for trying new authors so when this author was recommended to me I started looking for her books in all the used bookstores I frequent but I just never saw any so when this one came up as a kindle freebie I jumped on it.

I was actually surprised by how much I liked this book considering its a take on the classic Pride & Prejudice and we all know that I detest Pride & Prejudice (I know it's shocking) and all the re-tellings of it really don't help endear the original to me.

However, there was just something about the way the author wrote this one that I felt compelled to like it more than any other re-telling I've read. What I think really worked for the author was that used her sense of humour quite a lot in the story of Venus and the Duke of Greycliffe.

Plus unlike Jane Austen you can tell that the author wrote this just  for the fun of writing it and that she intended for it to be a story that is light, easy and fun to read. I think it's the perfect read for a commute or just sitting on the beach beacause of it only being 106 pages long. If you like romance, and want a light hearted read this one may just be up your alley and for that I have no problem recommending it to a few of my friends. Just don't go into reading it thinking the writing will be superb it's just a fun bit of fluff to be enjoyed.
