Quote-Tastic Monday #33

This one is simple and just about sharing your favorite quotes and the books they come from! Hosted by the FABULOUS Anna at Herding Cats & Burning Soup

The Fellowship of the Ring (Lord of the Rings, #1)
Cover taken from Goodreads.com

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

A few of you might've noticed that I've been reading this one for the last week or so (I've been taking my time with it because the writing is brilliant and I want to finish it but don't at the same time). This is my favourite verse in the book, and has been even before I read it as it's very popular and I think if there's any part of a book I'd get tattooed on me it would be this (and a Harry Potter one of course). I just love it.

Waiting On Wednesday #96

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine and is where we can talk about books we are looking forward to being released.

My Real Children

Summary:

It's 2015, and Patricia Cowan is very old. "Confused today," read the notes clipped to the end of her bed. She forgets things she should know—what year it is, major events in the lives of her children. But she remembers things that don’t seem possible. She remembers marrying Mark and having four children. And she remembers not marrying Mark and raising three children with Bee instead. She remembers the bomb that killed President Kennedy in 1963, and she remembers Kennedy in 1964, declining to run again after the nuclear exchange that took out Miami and Kiev.

Her childhood, her years at Oxford during the Second World War—those were solid things. But after that, did she marry Mark or not? Did her friends all call her Trish, or Pat? Had she been a housewife who escaped a terrible marriage after her children were grown, or a successful travel writer with homes in Britain and Italy? And the moon outside her window: does it host a benign research station, or a command post bristling with nuclear missiles?

Two lives, two worlds, two versions of modern history. Each with their loves and losses, their sorrows and triumphs. My Real Children is the tale of both of Patricia Cowan's lives...and of how every life means the entire world.

Length: 320 pages (Hardcover)
Expected Publication Date: May 20th 2014 by Tor Books

Why I'm Waiting:

The main reason I want to read this one so badly is because it sounds so different from anything that I've ever read and sounds completely amazing as well.

Thief's Magic (Millenium’s Rule, #1)

Summary:

In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, discovers an sentient book in an ancient tomb. Vella was once a young sorcerer-maker, until she was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been gathering information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen’s world faces.

Elsewhere, in an land ruled by the priests since a terrible war depleted all but a little magic, Rielle the dyer’s daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels. Yet she knows from her ability to sense the stain it leaves behind that she has a talent for it, and that there are people willing to teach her how to use it, should she ever need to risks the Angels’ wrath.

Further away, a people called the Travellers live their entire lives on the move, trading goods from one world to another. They know that each world has its own store of magic, reducing or increasing a sorcerer’s abilities, so that if one entered a weak world they may be unable to leave it again. Each family maintains a safe trading route passed down through countless generations and modified whenever local strife makes visiting dangerous. But this is not the only knowledge the Travellers store within their stories and songs, collected over millennia spent roaming the universe. They know a great change is due, and that change brings both loss and opportunity.

Why I'm Waiting:

I have the first books in two of this author's other series on my TBR list for this winter which I am determined to get to before this one comes out. I knew this one was one that I'd need to try as soon as I read the summary.

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1)

Top Ten Tuesday #52

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

Top Ten Things On My Reading Wishlist:
(if you could make authors write about these things you would. Could be a specific type of character, an issue tackled, a time period, a certain plot, etc.)
1.

Characters who are not willowy blondes or brunettes. I don't mean to offend anyone but I would love to see more diverse characters. Give us short girls, tall girls, skinny girls and plus size girls. I think some of my greatest heroes have been characters in books but they only ever fit one image. Also I would love to see more multiracial, Asian, African etc characters. This goes for more male characters breaking the traditional body builder blonde/brunette stereotype as well. Give us men with beards, a bit of a tummy, ANYTHING just make 'em different.

2.

I would love to read more books set in Africa. I love the continent and will read pretty much any genre as long as it's set there.

3.

More YA books set in Canada. I live in Canada and would love to see more YA set in this great country of mine. We have a few amazing writers who set their books here but I would love to see more. Most Canadian writers that I know of only write novels or mysteries.

4.

More historical fiction set in Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and South America. I love historical fiction and would love to see more taking place in these locations.

5.

Prehistoric Fiction.
I absolutely adore prehistoric fiction Ex. The Clan of The Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel. I think it's a fascinating topic and would love to see more of it. In fact I do see more of it now than a couple of years ago but I'm greedy and wish more authors wrote books in this genre.

6.

Books that deal with the Celts. Ever since I first discovered King Arthur I've been obsessed with the Celts and would like to see more fiction about them.

7.

Gargoyles.
Another thing that I'm seeing a few more authors write about but ever since I saw the tv show Gargoyles that was popular back in the late 90's I've loved them.

8.

More Interracial couples.
Come on authors! It's 2014 and I would love to see more interracial couples that reflect relationships in the real world.

9.

More fantasy romance with elves. Hello have y'all seen Legolas? We need romance with hero's like him. 'Nuff said.

10.

More historical fiction with female warriors.

Aren‘t you going to get up?"

He put a hand on the curve of her hip, a possessive gesture that had already become
familiar.

"No. Let‘s have more sex.
