*[Blog Tour Review] Sherlock's Home: The Adventure of the Contentious Crone by Pamela Rose

Sherlock's Home: The Adventure of the Contentious Crone

Summary:

The Adventure of the Contentious Crone is the first in the mystery cozy series featuring amateur sleuth Finn Sherlock. A new business owner, Finn unexpectedly discovers a body in a civil war era hiding place within the walls of Sherlock’s Home Mystery Bookstore, which also includes the adjoining 221b Bakery. Finn soon discovers that the body belongs to Odds Bodkins, who was on the crime scene for the annual ‘Fright Night’ Halloween tour. But, when the murder weapon that is responsible for the contentious crone’s death is discovered by the local sheriff to be a hangman’s noose belonging to Finn’s beloved Uncle Oz, there is more heating up at Sherlock’s Home than the bakery ovens. The game is definitely afoot as Finn Sherlock, assisted by her twin sister Echo, pursues a determined murderer to vindicate her beloved Uncle Oz and dissipate the cloud of suspicion hovering over Sherlock’s Home.

Over the last few years I've really started to see the appeal of cozy mysteries. When I was younger I wasn't much of a fan of the genre but now I can really appreciate reading a nice relaxing cozy mystery on a fall day in October.

Sherlock's Home was a quaint small town read featuring Finn, Echo and their Uncle Oz as Finn with her ragtag relations band together to help get her poor Uncle Oz out of some serious trouble. I really liked the twins in the book. They were different from each other but in certain ways you could see the similarities in their personalities and the Sherlocks were definitely one of my favourite book families I've come across in awhile. It brought to mind the Plum family from the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.

I loved the cozy feeling of the book. While the characters were new to me they had that familiarity that I really enjoy about the genre, I find that even if it's the first book in a series that often it's like meeting an old friend which is how I thought about the lot in this book.

I thought the plot in this cozy was really well thought out and while I usually figure out who the culprit is early on in them this one kept me guessing and I loved the plot twists and turns and I found that the pacing was just right. The story didn't hasten to a speedy conclusion nor did I find that it took too long to get there either and it really surprised me.

Overall, I thought that this was a delightful read and I will for sure be keeping Pamela Rose on my little list of authors to watch out for and I hope to see Finn, Echo and Uncle Oz again soon.

I would recommend this book to fans of cozy mysteries set in a small town with well written characters, plot twists and writing that makes you feel as if you're part of the story yourself.
