Top Ten Tuesday #74

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created here at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

Top Ten Books I'm Not Sure I Want To Read:

Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2)Eve (Eve, #1)Insurgent (Divergent, #2)Obsidian (Lux, #1)The Selection (The Selection, #1)The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1)Glitch (Glitch, #1)Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1)City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2)On the Jellicoe Road

Catching Fire- Because THG was just okay to me
Eve- Because I heard iffy things about it.
Insurgent- Because I thought Divergent was mediocre.
Obsidian- Because of the hype.
The Selection- Because I heard it was meh.
The Evolution of Mara Dyer- The hype has me unsure about it.
Glitch- Because I don't know many people who liked it.
Under the Never Sky- Too hyped up.
City of Ashes- Because I'm afraid I won't like it as much as City of Bones.
Jellicoe Road- The hype.

What's your Top 10 this Tuesday?

  1. the hype surrounding Jellicoe Road scared me off a little but I've been a fan of Melina Marchetta since I was 12. For me it lived up to expectations and I'm so glad I decided to give it a chance because I enjoy Melina's writing and the characters are great.
Obsidian didn't live up to the hype for me but I read the next few book in the series and I am liking where it's going. I'm currently reading Opposition and whilst these books aren't my favourite, they are entertaining.
The Selection is exactly what it appears to be. A somewhat dystopian version of The Bachelor. It's fairly predictable and I'm not sure I liked most of the characters but I'm glad I gave it a go because I like seeing what everyone is talking about.

If you do get around to reading any of these books, I hope they surprise you by living up to the hype :)

  2. Great covers here. I only read the first of Hunger Games. I couldn't stand reading kids killing kids although it does happen in gang warfare. I've read five of the Mortal Instruments. I really liked them.

  3. On The Jellicoe Road has hype? I actively have to search for people who like it as much as me. Perhaps I am not looking in the right places... I will tell you though, its not going to be everyones cup of tea. The first time reading it can be very confusing, it has much teen angst, and its not really a happy story. I however love it, it holds a place in my top 3.

  4. Fantastic list. I'm a bit nervous to read Jellicoe Road as well because of the hype. I have Obsidian, but again haven't got to it yet because everyone seems to rave and I don't know if I will love it as much. I enjoyed The Selection but it is an incredibly cheesy read and the characters aren't all that likeable. It's addictive though.

  5. I really liked the first Hunger Games book but after that I didn't want to read anymore. My oldest (19) read The Selection and really enjoyed it though she admitted it was a little cheesy. It's funny what hype does to us. Sometimes it makes me want to read the book and sometimes it makes me want to get as far from it as I can!

  6. The first three Mortal Instruments books are definitely worth your time. I have the last one in the series on my list because books 4 and 5 just weren't as good.

Give in to the hype on Obsidian and Under the Never Sky. They have gotten a lot of attention for a reason. :)

  7. Okay, let's see . . .

*Catching Fire is good and it's probably my favorite of the series
*The Selection is for when you need a mindless read and don't want to think too much. However, there are so many plot holes that it hurts my heart. I skimmed the second and skipped the third, so you're probably okay to skip it all
*The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer I started last night and so far love it. Give that one a chance!

  8. I read Obsidian without nothing anything about it, only the hype. And I ended up truly enjoying it. I love how casual the series feels, but at the same time it has all the action and seriousness that it needs.

Also, with the Selection you have to go into the book just wanting a fluffy read. Everyone says its like a reality show into a book which is very true. Just don't except some awesome dystopian society, and you might enjoy it.

  9. Jellicoe Road was very good, a bit different but I liked it. Fun topic today. kelley—the road goes ever ever on

  10. I agree about Obsidian and The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. I have them both but the hype is a scary scary thing! Catching Fire and City of Ashes for me at least, were the best.

  12. I always find that the books with all the hype are the books I could've done without.
