Summary:
Eighteen-year-old Tanzy Hightower knows horses, has grown up with them on Wildwood Farm. She also knows not to venture beyond the trees that line the pasture. Things happen out there that cannot be explained. Or undone. Worse, no one but she and the horses can see what lurks in the shadows of the woods.
When a moonlit ride turns into a terrifying chase, Tanzy is left to question everything, from the freak accident that killed her father to the very blood in her veins. Broken and confused, she turns to Lucas, a scarred, beautiful stranger, and to Vanessa, a charming new friend who has everything Tanzy doesn’t.
But why do they seem to know more about her than she knows herself?

Praise
“Virginia’s trees look like they’re burning. Most of them blaze crimson or gold, but some still have a chokehold on their green. I wish they’d give it up already. Leaves are more beautiful when they’re dying.”
And so Moonlit begins. From here the story rolls from one twist to another with many vivid characters whose motives are hard to predict. I found myself being suspicious of everyone, wanting to tell Tanzy to be very careful. The deeper I fell into the plot, the more questions kept rising to the surface. But not to worry, all of my questions were answered. Appropriate for all ages, if you love paranormal fantasy mixed with suspense, mystery and other-worldly romance, you’ll love this novel!

Prologue
The first anniversary of my father’s death was even harder on my mother. Back then, I thought she was haunted most by what she didn’t know. I refused to blame her when she raged above me on our staircase that night, drunk and sad and angry. When she made me promise I’d never ride again. When she hurled a half-full bottle of vodka at my face and it exploded on the wooden stairs at my feet. I hadn’t tried to get out of the way. She had just missed.
I wanted to tell her that knowledge was no solace, that what you know can burn inside you until there’s nothing left but guilt and ash. I also wanted to protect her from losing the only piece of him she had left. So I didn’t say a word.
Review
Moonlit was a really surprising novel for me. I was worried that despite the absolutely gorgeous cover and intriguing summary that the book would turn out to be one I didn't enjoy as much as I hoped to but I was wrong.
Moonlit was an amazingly refreshing YA paranormal novel. Lately I've been distancing myself rom the YA genre a little because I was finding it getting too bogged down but Moonlit seems to have brought me out of my funk. The author, Jadie Jones is a breath of fresh air for the genre and Moonlit was a great read.
When I was little I loved horses, not that I ever saw real ones all that much but I was obsessed with them and Moonlit brought that childhood nostalgia back and I think that's what connected me to the story the most. Yes the writing was very good, the pacing was excellent though there were a couple spots I would have sped up and the characters were well developed but the magical aspect and the horses were my favourite parts of the book. What struck me most though was how often I found myself smiling out of pure enjoyment.
Tanzy was a really great character and I thought she was really well written she seemed so real and down to earth even though life has thrown her a lot of curveballs I admired her spirit, determination and stubbornness to go on with life even though she had her weak moments as well. I enjoyed how the other characters were written and liked the different roles they played in the story and thought they all seemed to fit together very well.
The plot was engaging, and kept me guessing as to how it would turn out. Just when I thought that I knew what was going to happen next the author threw me for a loop and I love when that happens. I enjoyed the magical/paranormal/fantasy aspect of the novel a lot.
Overall, just in case you didn't get it. I really liked Moonlit, so much so that I really hope that the author turns this into a series because I'm definitely wanting to read more by Jadie Jones. I would highly recommend this to fans of YA novels who want a strong female character and something a little different. Jadie Jones is an author to watch out for.

WOW! Thank you!! Yes, Moonlit is the first book in a trilogy. I am polishing the sequel right now :) You have made my entire week. <3
ReplyDeleteGreat review, I love horses as well. I find with YA I need to mix in a few adult and NA books in between. This sounds fresh and original.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you liked this book! I picked it up when it was either an Amazon freebie or bargain, I can't remember which, because it looked really promising. I look forward to reading it -- after I get through about 20 ARCs and some other books I promised to read!
